April 2023 saw the PE department run a ski trip to Les Deux Alpes in France for 36 students from year 8 and 9. The eagerly awaited ski trip started its final preparations shortly after February half term where the students undertook their ski lessons at Brentwood Ski Centre prior to departure, allowing those who had skied last year in the school ski lessons to get back up to scratch and those who had never skied before to get in front before we hit the French Alps.
Departure day soon arrived, staff greeted some tired eyes at the Gosfield Road Leisure Centre at 2am but having quickly loaded the coach, we were on our way to Dover. Upon arrival at the Port of Dover, students were starting to awake after their early morning meet. Despite the small delay at Dover…..we found our way to the front of the line.
An hour or several down, the odd sick bag and a coach of excited students, we arrived having climbed twisting, turning mountain roads to the Les Deux Alpes Ski Resort. The conditions on the first day could not have been any better for us, with a fresh dusting of snow and blue skies.
On the first morning, students spent their time honing their new skiing ability on snow with their instructors before exploring other parts of the mountain.
As the confidence of students grew while skiing and the fear of heights were overcome, more areas of the mountain were explored giving students more opportunity to ski different runs and challenge themselves.
During the evening, there was plenty of entertainment to occupy students, with laser tag and bowling, with Miss McTaggart being consistent and coming last in each of these competitions. The quiz night and bingo gave students time to rest and recharge before skiing the next day.
Overall, the trip was fantastic fun for everyone involved and all students developed both their skiing and as a person while having memories for a lifetime, I am sure. The students were a credit to their parents/carers as well as Robert Clack.
