Under-15 Girls Cricket

This summer term has proven to be a very difficult and challenging one for the U15 girls’ cricket. Unfortunately, they have been up against some impressive private and independent schools in their tournaments and came out with some losses. Within these games, however, there were many small victories; wickets, caught outs, 4s and 6s. This only made the girls’ more determined as ever. In their final competition of the year, the girls were determined and desperate for a win and they finally did! Not necessarily coming 1st place, but came 3rd in the Essex Tier 3 Cricket Competition. After getting beaten most of the summer season, coming out with 3rd was a relief for them and they were very happy – they even got to play at the County Cloud Essex Grounds which was an incredible experience in itself!

I would also like to highlight and commend the year 8 students who I played up this year. They took on the courage to play in some of the U15 games which only made them stronger as players. They performed some outstanding bowls and hits off the bat, made friends along the way and had fun with the challenge. It has been a pleasure working with all year groups this year and I am excited for the next seasons.

Cricket Leaders Event

What a brilliant 2 days the cricket leaders had this summer! 35 students across year 8, 9 and 10 umpired, led and helped organise the boys and girls Primary Schools Dynamo Cricket Tournament. This tournament is very important to Barking and Dagenham as this was the decider to determine who went through to the London Youth Games. Prior to this the students took part in a Cricket Umpiring CPD with Essex Cricket to help boost their confidence and knowledge of the game. When it come to the leader’s events, the students remained professional against difficult games where they had to make quick decisions throughout. They done themselves and Robert Clack proud; they were polite, helpful and enthusiastic. Towards the end, the students helped give out the medals to the placing teams and announced the team going through to the London Youth Games. I am looking forward to the leaders’ events next year!

This summer, debaters from Year 9 to 11 across our 3 sites had the opportunity to attend the annual Global Classrooms conference for Model UN yet again. This took place over two days in Mulberry School who are known for holding the largest MUN programme for state secondary schools and international schools in the UK. At these professional conferences, students play the role of ambassadors in simulations of UN committees. The event had a warm, supportive atmosphere and promoted co-operation, leadership, public speaking skills and confidence in global citizenship. This time, we represented Afghanistan and Bangladesh. Nada and Aliza won ‘best delegate’. Manthan secured ‘honourable mention’ whilst Denitsa was recognised as ‘distinguished delegate’. A special mention also goes to Nina who achieved the ‘rising star’ award in her committee. Well done to everyone involved! Their behaviour over the two days was impeccable as they represented our school to the very highest standard. Ms Aktar and Mr Saito

On the 25 th of June, the Year 12 History cohort visited SOAS university for a school trip. They had a brilliant lecture on Chinese history to support their NEA knowledge. The students were extremely engaged and asked thought-provoking questions about Chinese history. Along with the lecture, they had a university seminar where they could speak directly to the lecturer about the importance of secondary and primary literature. In addition, the students were given a tour of the SOAS university campus and an opportunity to engage with university students. Finally, they ended the day with a personal statement workshop, which was extremely insightful and informative. Mr Crosbie Jones and I were extremely impressed with their dedication to learning about university life. Miss S Aktar

Following a recent trip to Champneys Tring Spa Resort in Hertfordshire, we are delighted to announce that 4 of our students have been offered placements. We are so proud of the students and the hard work they have demonstrated. To obtain a position with Champney is the highest accolade we could hope for. Congratulations to Ruby, Jaime, Ellie-Mai and Unique and also to the Beauty department for all the support and guidance they have provided.

The Science Department is pleased to share the huge success of our Year 12 and Year 13 students who took part in the Institute of Research in Schools Project (IRIS). Throughout this academic year, 20 students investigated a wide range of issues in the topic of Earth Observation including changes in atmospheric gas concentrations or the environmental conditions before large wildfire events to changes in water availability due to flooding events. Students used the data provided by the Sentinel satellites and other scientific sources to conduct their analyses of environmental datasets which led all groups to prepare an undergraduate-style research poster. These posters constituted a basis for scientific discussions at the IRIS London Conference 2024 held in Friend's House, London. Here, over 450 participants, including students from schools across the London region, presented their scientific posters to peers, their teachers, and guest scientific speakers from universities such as Oxford, Cambridge and industry. Pupils did a fantastic job sharing their research with other like-minded students and trying to understand other projects in topics ranging from Ionic Liquids, Cosmic Mining, or DNA Origami. We are particularly proud of Shanzay Ahmed (Y12) who was chosen as one of six students to present on stage at the conference. Her five-minute presentation was not only exemplary and of academic standard, she was thrust into the limelight as the surprise first pupil speaker of the conference. Her presentation was of such an amazing standard that IRIS has passed along a huge " congratulations for her excellent opening presentation - going first is never easy, but she was excellent, fluent, confident, and able to handle the questions". The Director of IRIS Dr Jo Foster said of all the presentations "It wouldn't be out of place at the high profile scientific conference." It is a massive achievement that we are very proud of.

It was another year of exceptional artwork from Robert Clack students ranging from y9 to y13 at Secondary Art Matters in UEL. Beautiful and detailed pieces were displayed, including some exceptional oil painting portraiture, which garnered much praise by everyone who entered the room, including several other Heads of Art from schools across London. We are proud to be invited to display our students work and even more proud to display such high standards of painting, drawings, and sculpture. Well done to all students in Art and Design.

Green Shoes Arts has teamed up with Valence House Museum to curate a new exhibition celebrating the works of Henry Gillard Glindoni, a notable artist who lived and worked in Dagenham during the late 19th century. This exciting showcase will feature a significant number of Glindoni's pieces, with contributions from both Valence House’s collection and loans from galleries and museums across the country. The collaboration aims to raise awareness of this important local artist and to foster a deeper connection between the community and the museum. A key focus of the exhibition is engaging young people. In line with this goal, Green Shoes Arts recently conducted a workshop with Year 10 photography students as part of the "Beyond the Easel" project. The workshop introduced students to the art of cyanotypes, a photographic process that creates images without a camera. This hands-on experience allowed students to explore the creative potential of this unique technique, resulting in enthusiastic participation and enjoyment as they crafted their own cyanotypes. The initiative not only provided an educational and enjoyable activity for our students but also sparked an interest in the historical and artistic significance of Glindoni's work. Here are some pictures from the trip.

Ex pupil Zuzana Lednarova came back to school on Wednesday 5 th June to speak in Year 9 Assembly at Green Lane. Zuzana told the students about her journey from Robert Clack Sixth Form to her role as a Geotechnical Engineer – much of which is spent off shore on vessels. As part of our Achieve Excellence Programme Zuzana then took the time to speak 1-1 with a Y8 student who has ambitions to be a Marine Engineer. Thank you so much to Zuzana for giving up her time and being such a positive role model to our students.

Students across years 10, 12 and 13 have been able to attend performances at The Globe Theatre. Year 10s from across the three sites went to see Romeo and Juliet, which they are studying for GCSE, year 13s have been to see The Duchess of Malfi and year 12 and 13s went to see Richard III. The students thoroughly enjoyed the trips and had lots to say about the different performances. In English Literature at A Level students are marked on referring to critical interpretations so it is really important for them to see the plays live. Here is some feedback from an English student who saw both Richard III and Duchess of Malfi: The A level English cohort were lucky to be able to see two productions of our exam texts, The Duchess of Malfi and Richard III. The Duchess of Malfi was staged in the Sam Wanamaker playhouse indoors by candlelight, which was extremely interesting as candles were used to emphasise certain parts of the play and make the experience much more engaging. It was insightful to be able to see the play as it would have been staged for audiences at the time and we will most certainly be able to use this in our exam. On the other hand, Richard III was staged in the Globe Theatre in the daylight, which was much more immersive. Natural lighting meant that not as many lighting changes were used and we could focus on the story, and the round open air theatre created a truly immersive atmosphere. Both trips were absolutely amazing and will certainly help us with our upcoming exam.

The Art department are continuing their work on the Vision and Voices project. During their third visit to the National Gallery, Year 7 vision and voices students focused on improving their public speaking skills. They learned about the significance of pace, volume, and body language in effective communication. By discussing artwork in the gallery, they practiced and enhanced their abilities to express themselves confidently. All students exhibited exemplary behaviour, reflecting positively on our school and demonstrating their growth as articulate communicators. Thank you to Miss O'Neill for organising this trip.
