The year 7 pupils have been working through the ‘Scientific skills’ unit, where they have been working through all the important skills needed to be successful science students. These skills lay the foundation for their science journey and are used throughout their time at Robert Clack. Students have been learning about the scientific method, graphing, variables, tables and even How to use a Bunsen burner! Students are guided along by their teachers on how to use a Bunsen burner safely. This practical in particular is enjoyed by the year 7’s and many lessons after we often get students asking “Are we using the Bunsen burner today?”
The year 8 Pupils have been exploring the world of chemistry through the ‘Atoms and Matter’ unit and looking at elements and compounds as well as the periodic table and reactions. Students were able to create their very own compound using iron and sulphur by heating it over the Bunsen burner to create iron sulphide. They then carried out different observations to compare the properties of the two elements on their own, as a mixture and then as the compound iron sulphide.
The year 9 pupils have been working through the ‘Organ Systems’ unit, which covers the circulatory system, the skeletal system and other organ systems in the human body that all work together to form humans! In one lesson students got to dissect chicken wings and look at how the muscles and bones work together to create movement. In another lesson students got to dissect hearts and show off their surgical skills. They investigated all the parts of the hearts and described how the heart pumps blood around the body using the heart they dissected.
We strive to provide our learners with real, concrete scientific learning and the students thoroughly enjoyed being hands on, which altogether enriched their learning experience!
