This half-term the students in KS3 Computing Club have been having fun and at the same time learning the importance of robotics and its use in our daily lives. They learnt that robots are currently being used in a lot of places such as in the hospitals for conducting very complex medical surgery. They have also been able to relate with NASA’s Perseverance Rover currently exploring Mars and looking for signs of past life.
They have enjoyed working on assembling parts of a robot “Rolling Robots”. Throughout the practical sessions, the pupils enjoyed connecting the different parts of the robots to form a fully functioning robot and by instructing it via a remote control. These sessions touched on the different parts and types of robots, like Mobile Robots, Rolling Robots, Walking Robots, Stationary Robots, Autonomous Robots.
The project base practical was inspirational and supported the pupils to unlock their true potential with an innovative, experience-based, and self-motivated approach to robotics and to support their personal and professional development for a fulfilling future career in Computer Science and Engineering.
In another session pupils learnt that the structure of a robot is usually mostly mechanical, commonly known as “a kinematic chain” and just like all robots, they also contain electronics and without electronic circuits the engines cannot be controlled. The act of NASA, sending robots to other planets and controlling them remotely really inspired the pupils.
Learning about robots was fun, the pupils showed passion, dedication and hard work that can open career doors in Computer Programming, Computer Science, Engineering and Industrial placement within the robotics industry.
Computing Club is open to all KS3 pupils and is held every Tuesday 3.15pm after school in LC4, Green Lane and hosted by Mr Yahya.
