The Science Department is pleased to share the huge success of our Year 12 and Year 13 students who took part in the Institute of Research in Schools Project (IRIS). Throughout this academic year, 20 students investigated a wide range of issues in the topic of Earth Observation including changes in atmospheric gas concentrations or the environmental conditions before large wildfire events to changes in water availability due to flooding events. Students used the data provided by the Sentinel satellites and other scientific sources to conduct their analyses of environmental datasets which led all groups to prepare an undergraduate-style research poster. These posters constituted a basis for scientific discussions at the IRIS London Conference 2024 held in Friend's House, London. Here, over 450 participants, including students from schools across the London region, presented their scientific posters to peers, their teachers, and guest scientific speakers from universities such as Oxford, Cambridge and industry. Pupils did a fantastic job sharing their research with other like-minded students and trying to understand other projects in topics ranging from Ionic Liquids, Cosmic Mining, or DNA Origami.
We are particularly proud of Shanzay Ahmed (Y12) who was chosen as one of six students to present on stage at the conference. Her five-minute presentation was not only exemplary and of academic standard, she was thrust into the limelight as the surprise first pupil speaker of the conference. Her presentation was of such an amazing standard that IRIS has passed along a huge "congratulations for her excellent opening presentation - going first is never easy, but she was excellent, fluent, confident, and able to handle the questions". The Director of IRIS Dr Jo Foster said of all the presentations "It wouldn't be out of place at the high profile scientific conference." It is a massive achievement that we are very proud of.
