In preparation for our upcoming Year 11 unit on crime, the Year 10 GCSE sociology classes went on a visit this summer term to the Clink Prison. It was a very fun and educational day out. We felt even more privileged that this was the first ever GCSE Sociology trip in all of Robert Clack which we were the first pupils for.
During the trip, we learnt lots about Middle-Aged prison and the history of Southwark. For example, in Southwark, it was notorious for a place roaming with crime from the rich and also the poor. Inside the prison, there were sculptures of lifeless skeletons and rats alongside torture weapons used in those times, for example, the Morning Star, the Chair of Torture, The Rack and Brazen Bull. The Brazen Bull was definitely the most popular method as it was probably the most painful torture method in history and was described as such where you could hear the echoes of screams of the dying victims (and that’s only one off the many severe punishments that were imposed on people at that time).
After visiting the museum, we went to a garden which had a beautiful pond. We had a picnic with our teachers and got to speak to the locals in the area about their experiences of living in a borough which has crime related tourist attractions. Thank you to Miss Aktar for organising this trip and for Mr George, Mr Hamill and Miss Stamp for attending with us.
Overall, the whole trip was a day well spent and would definitely encourage other students to learn more about what Sociology has to offer when choosing their GCSE options!
