As part of the continued efforts of the PE Department to give our students the opportunity to experience new things and develop new skills outside the classroom environment we proposed 3, two hour ski lessons for year 7 students. Having been met with over 50 responses from students at both Green Lane and Lymington Fields sites, we were delighted with the interest from students and parents alike.
After a much delayed start date due to Covid-19 last winter, April saw the eagerly awaited school ski lessons commence. The initial group of 12 year 7 students started their lessons on the first Friday back after the Easter break. The lessons which took place at Brentwood Ski Centre on a dry ski slope were focused around teaching the students the basics of using ski equipment, balancing on skis whilst moving, controlling speed and use of the ski lift. Safe to say the progress that the students made was nothing short of incredible, from the first lesson where students were side-stepping up the slope, to the last lesson where a number of students were using the ski lift.
So successful were the first group of lessons that we have already started on the second group with a third group of students planned to start after half-term. This is something that we are aiming to expand in the future to give more students from Dagenham the opportunity to learn how to ski and diversify their skill set.
