On Tuesday 12th July 2022 we celebrated the sporting prowess of our KS3 students at their Sports Awards event.

In attendance were Head teacher Mr Taylor, Head of the Green Lane Site Mr Richardson and Head of Lymington Fields Dr Spandl, they were delighted to be joined by special guests to present our very talented students with their achievements through sports awards.

Barry Taylor, former Clack PE Teacher, for over 35 years, retired from his Director of Sport role four years ago, in 2018. Barry is still a great supporter of the school he regularly turns up on a Saturday morning to watch the students play rugby.

Former student, Aaron McLean, had a long career as a professional footballer, including stints at Peterborough United and in the Premier League with Hull. Aaron now appears regularly on TV as a pundit for Sky Sports and BT Sport. Another great supporter of the school, who hasn’t forgotten his roots, Aaron has been back a number of times over the years.

The evening’s awards began with the presentation of colours. Students across all year groups can earn their colours by being consistently involved in at least three sports or participating in 80% of Rugby or Netball matches throughout the school year. Year 7 are awarded different coloured socks, year 8 different shorts and year 9 a special rugby top. This is a great incentive to work towards and the pride on the student’s faces as they received their colours said it all.

The evening continued with each sport presenting individual awards across all three year groups. Football, Cricket and Netball, presented talented students with players of the year, for Rugby, most improved players and players of the year, Dance, dancer of the year and Athletics, athlete of the year. Overall sports person and runners up were also presented to some of the most outstanding students across the board.

The night also celebrated many sporting highlights of the year including our U15 Cricket Team winning The London Cup, our Y9 Football Team winning The Borough Cup with a goal difference of 32 and eleven school athletics records broken. What a fantastic year for school sport, especially rewarding after the students had missed so much due to the pandemic.

The event concluded with a closing speech from Aaron, saying how much of an honour it was for him to be present and how happy he was to still be in contact with some of his teachers who had inspired him. He spoke about how the school, especially Barry Taylor, had helped him with the tools he needed to reach his dreams of playing in the Premier League and his work on TV. He told the students to make the most of their school years and that he looks forward to congratulating them on their achievements in the future.

A fitting end to a fantastic sporting year, celebrating the success of our students. Of course none of this would be possible without the support of the dedicated PE staff, who give up so much of their own time, evenings and weekends to support our students.

A very special thank you must go to both Barry Taylor and Aaron McLean. It is always a pleasure for the school to welcome back former teachers and students, we look forward to seeing you again very soon.

Our pupils recently enjoyed an exciting and enriching trip to LEGOLAND Windsor Resort as part of their involvement in Lego Club. Throughout the visit, the pupils represented the school exceptionally well, demonstrating exemplary behaviour, enthusiasm, and maturity at all times. A special thank you goes to Mr Van Gelder and Miss Day for accompanying the trip and supporting the pupils throughout the day. Their dedication and encouragement played a significant role in making the experience both memorable and enjoyable for everyone involved. During the visit, pupils also participated in the engaging ‘LEGO, Camera, Action!’ workshop, where they collaborated creatively in teams to produce their own LEGO film. This hands-on experience allowed pupils to develop their imagination, communication, teamwork, and storytelling skills in a fun and inspiring environment. Congratulations to all the pupils involved for being outstanding ambassadors for the school and for embracing every opportunity with such positivity and enthusiasm. Miss A Yasin (Head of Year 8)

Dr Niki Kalaydzhieva , a lecturer at UCL specialising in pure maths, conducted a Game, SET, Maths workshop, where pupils learned how to play a game called SET. This game enhances pupils' understanding of finite geometry, modular arithmetic and projective geometry through an interactive problem-solving card game. Here is a video of the game: ( How to Play Set (Math Card Game) It was fantastic to see students engaged by the workshop and interacting with each other to master the card game.

At the end of last term, form 7D received letters from their pen pals at Bluebells Academy in Kenya. They then spent form time writing and designing postcards to send back. Students shared their favourite things, showed off their drawing skills and asked their pen pals questions about their lives in Kenya. We are excited to get their replies!
