SIXTH FORM MISSION STATEMENT
Our mission is to equip students with the knowledge, skills and qualifications they need for the future. Our aim is to ensure that our pupils succeed academically and that they also become responsible, informed citizens who can make positive contribute to British society. We strive to ensure that all pupils aspire to reach their full potential and set themselves ambitious goals for the future.
A range of programmes of study are available to our sixth form pupils to cater for a wide range of interests and aspirations. These range from a mixed timetable of A level and BTEC qualifications to purely academic (i.e. A levels) or a purely vocational (i.e. BTEC qualifications) pathway. In total there are over 40 subjects available for students to study including some full time options and it is through our collaboration with two other local schools as part of the North East Consortium that were are able to offer such a wide curriculum choice.
In addition to the core academic or vocational subjects that a pupil studies, a wide range of enrichment and personal develop opportunities are on offer. These form an integral part of a pupil’s timetable and ensure that they develop the skills and attributes that are valued by Universities and employers. These options include our Rugby and Netball Academies who have won County competitions, the Duke of Edinburgh award, the Extended Project Qualification, IFS certificate in Financial Studies and a variety of community Outreach programmes.
A Levels and BTEC qualifications place significant demands on pupils in terms of the need become independent and responsible learners whilst at the same time maturing as a person. We therefore invest heavily in the pastoral support that we provide our students. In addition to the Sixth Form Team, a team of specifically trained sixth form mentors and Key Stage 5 Subject Leaders work together to ensure that each pupil is supported in achieving excellence. Regular assemblies and a tailored programme of seminars and personal development days provide pupils the additional support they require to succeed. There are specific programmes in place to support students applying to competitive University courses and for students applying to apprenticeships.
We collaborate with a number of high profile partners including the University of Durham, the University of Oxford, the University of Hull the Social Mobility Foundation, Kings College London, the Sutton Trust (UK and USA), Leadership through Sport, Debate Mate, the Brilliant Club, Robert Clack Alumni and the Worshipful Company of Chartered surveyors to ensure that all students access and information to help prepare them for their future Careers. All pupils complete a high quality work experience placement in Year 12 and have accessed to a Local Authority careers advisor. Students have the opportunity to attend events including plays, overseas trips as well as Higher Education and Employment fairs.
