Subsidiary Diploma –

Years 12 and 13

Diploma – Years 12 and 13

This two year course is designed to provide the underpinning knowledge, understanding and skills to progress into further education or into vocational science careers. The BTEC courses are currently 100% coursework and both cover the fundamentals of science in Chemistry, Biology and Physics as well as more obscure topics such as Forensic Science and Medical Physics.  In previous years, students have gone on to study Nursing, Sport Science and Environmental Science.  The Subsidiary Diploma is the equivalent to 1 A Level and the Diploma is the equivalent to 2 A Levels and UCAS points are awarded in the same manner as with A Level courses.

Subsidiary Diploma:

In Year 12, students study three core units: Fundamentals of Science, Working in the Science Industry and Scientific Practical Techniques.

 

In Year 13, students study an additional four units: Using Mathematical Tools for Science, Using Statistics for Science, Genetics and Genetic Engineering and Forensic Evidence, Collection and Analysis.

 

The grading is awarded as Pass, Merit, Distinction or Distinction* depending on a student performs in each unit.

Diploma:

In Year 12, students study six core units: Fundamentals of Science, Working in the Science Industry, Scientific Practical Techniques, Mathematical Tools for Science, Using Statistics for Science, Genetics and Genetic Engineering and Forensic Evidence, Collection and Analysis.

 

In Year 13, students study an additional six units: Scientific Investigation, Perceptions of Science, Physiology of Human Body Systems, Medical Physics Techniques, Forensic Fire Investigation and Traffic Accident Investigation.

 

The grading is awarded as Pass-Pass up to Distinction*-Distinction* depending on a student performs in each unit.
