Reading and the Information Centre
At Robert Clack reading is of upmost importance. We passionately believe that reading for pleasure helps students to improve their literacy levels and future life chances.
We have two excellent information centres which are well stocked with a range of interesting literature. Students are able to take out two books at a time and they are responsible for looking after them and paying any fines for late/lost books.
We use Accelerated Reader to track students reading and it forms an individualised online reading record for each student. The system allows students to take quizzes on books and it will count the number of words that they have read. In each lesson students are rewarded for passing their quizzes. Each half term there are gift vouchers on offer!
The highest achieving readers will become millionaires. Last year we took 30 millionaires to Harry Potter Studios as a rewards for all of their hard work.
We use Eclipse to run our library system. Students can log in to create reviews for books that they have read, reserve new books or to check their fines.
As a school we take the literacy of our students very seriously. We ensure that students are supported through a series of targeted and focussed interventions – especially on the lower school site.
We use assemblies to promote the ‘Word of the Week’ and students are very keen to use these words in lessons to extend their vocabulary.
‘Skills for Life’ lessons promote and develop students speaking and listening skills. We feel that developing spoken confidence is reflected in the written responses that students produce.
Each department has a literacy representative to ensure that literacy is addressed throughout the school in every lesson.
