About the Subject
Level 1/2 Award in Designing the Built Environment is designed to mainly support learners in schools and colleges who want to learn about the construction industry from the design and planning perspective. It provides learners with a broad introduction to the design sector of the construction industry and the types of career opportunities available. It is mainly suitable as a foundation for further study. This further study could provide learners with the awareness of the work of different types of job roles in the sector such as architects, design engineers, surveyors and planning officers. As a result, they may wish to start an apprenticeship or continue with their studies into higher education in order to pursue those job roles.
Unit 1: Safety and security in construction
This unit is externally assessed through a 1 hour exam.
Students will learn about health and safety legislation and how this impacts on the day to day running of a busy construction site.
Unit 2 Developing construction projects.
This unit is internally assessed.
Students will develop skills such as bricklaying, carpentry, plastering and painting and decorating.
Unit 3: Planning construction projects.
This unit is externally assessed through a 2 hour exam.
Students will develop a skill set which allows them to understand the process involved in planning simple construction projects.
