Year 11 Overview

The specifications are designed to encourage students to consider the practical application of business and economic concepts. The units provide the opportunity to explore the theories and concepts in the context of events in the business and economic world.

The courses will also provide progression for those wishing to continue their studies to GCE Business and or GCE Economics.

GCSE Business Studies

We are delighted to be offering the Business GCSE to students in the year 10 cohort. The course began in 2014 and the first set of results will be available in 2016.

This course has enabled us to really tailor to individual needs by offering a course that enables them to achieve the highest grades possible.

The GCSE course overall has two units to complete. In year 10 students will complete Unit 1, in year 11 students will complete unit 2 as well as a controlled assessment.

Unit 1 introduces students to issues concerning the setting up and operation of a business. It explores the activities of business and the reasons for success or failure. It encourages students to appreciate that businesses must operate within society and that this involves businesses engaging with a wide range of stakeholders who will hold differing perspectives.

Content of Unit 1:

1. Starting a Business

2. Marketing

3. Finance

4. People in Businesses

5. Operations Management

The Business BTEC Course focuses on preparing learners with the knowledge, analysis and practical skills required in the world of business. The two year course requires learners to complete three pieces of coursework: Exploring Business Purposes, Investigating Financial Control and Exploring Business Enterprise – an extended piece of coursework which will allow learners to develop entrepreneurial skills and consolidate their learning to date with an investigation into a business venture of their choice.

Results in the department are well above the National Average with 99% of pupils achieving Grades A-C in 2013.

Year 11 builds upon the content of Unit 1, allowing students to study businesses as they grow and the issues that expansion raises.

Content of Unit 2:

1. The Business Organisation

2. Marketing

3. Finance

4. People in Businesses

5. Operations Management

Unit 3 - Controlled assessment:

This unit is a controlled assessment unit. The work must be each students own individual response and must be produced under controlled conditions.

All controlled assessment tasks will be set by AQA. Tasks will be replaced each year and will only be available for one assessment opportunity.

AQA will provide schools with pre-released material which will require candidates to undertake a business investigation.
